It’s wine o’clock! Or: that one time I went to a wine tasting

I really don’t need much convincing to go for a few drinks with fab folks at the best of times, and even less so when it’s a wine tasting at Chester Beer & Wine in Hoole. Firstly because it’s my favourite shop in Chester and it’s just around the corner from me, and secondly… well, I mean, drinks! Wine! Bubbly! Get in me you beautiful monsters!

Yesterday the Tazmanian wine boffin Emma McRobb from Alliance Wine hosted a tasting of Pre-Christmas Drinks, which basically was just a great excuse to get together with a load of wine lovers and to drink some positively brilliant plonk. Sure, there was the underlying motive of getting a preview of some top Christmas offers and the “it” wines of the winter season and to get some inspiration for our festive drinkies but it wasn’t compulsory to pretend there was any deeper meaning to the night.

We tried 8 wines:

Mabis Prosecco Spumante Millesimato

Giavi prosecco Superiore, extra dry

Majella Sparkling Shiraz

Mabis Oropasso Biscard

Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Chardonnay

Mabis Neropasso Originale Rosso

Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Pinot Noir

Bodegas Gutiérrez Colosia Pedro Ximenez

I tried a lot of things that I never thought even existed before; sparkling shiraz, sweet dry prosecco and a chardonnay I actually like! I usually pass on chardonnay for the very simple reason that I have never had one that I have found in any way palatable. It’s too sweet and sickly but as it turns out, I have just come across very bad chardonnay. Maybe I’ve been too keen to believe the bad press chardonnay has been getting, I don’t know guys, but I this bad boy might just make its way to my Christmas stocking this season!

And I mean seriously, sparling red wine? What a novelty! It was a little fun and a lot of fabulous. If memory serves I have had something similar in Telfords Warehouse many moons ago but I’ve never come across it since. Now I know where to get my mittens on it again.

But my absolute favourite of the night was the Mabis Neropasso Originale Rosso. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s got balls of steel, and at just £10 a bottle you can’t go wrong. I’ve had many a more expensive wine that has nothing on this bad boy. But while it’s a big ballsy wine it still is super smooth, like velvet. So yeah, my exclusive love affair with Pinot Noir has come to an abrupt but tasty end.

Cheers Sam and Emma for a great night. The somewhat fuzzy head of today was totally worth it.
