Drinking wine in a 13th century crypt

If there’s something better than tasting top notch wines and quirky beers in a 13th century crypt on a leisurely afternoon I don’t really want to know about it.

Well that’s not entirely true, because beating such an afternoon would take some doing so I may actually want to know about it, I just don’t think there are that many better things.

But I digress.

Corks out Chester

Corks Out is an independent wine, spirit and craft ale specialist, and their Chester branch is located in the heart of the city on Watergate Street. They have 4 more stores in close proximity; Warrington, Heswall, Timperley and Alderley Edge, and the string of boutiques say their aim to demystify wine, by what it seems is helping people drink more of it with something they call a “Wine Jukebox”, which is probably the best idea anyone wanting to taste wine ever had. Ever.

The ingenious creation is safely lodged in the almost gothicesque little crypt in the Chester store (although all 5 stores have their own version of the tasting machine) and serves wine by a sample, a small or a large glass.

The wines are specifically selected by people who know far more about wine than I do and range from bottles you’d part with over £50 for, to wines with a price mark closer to a tenner.

Best thing about it? I can have a taster of a wine I probably would be far too cheap to buy by the bottle for a fraction of the price, or of a wine I haven’t even heard of before I commit to buy a whole bottle for a few tens of pounds.

And what’s even better? It’s all self-service, so there are little to no queues. All you need to do is buy a top-up card from the shop and use this to buy your wine from the machines. You pay £2 deposit for the card which will be returned to you if you take the card back, or you can keep the card. Whatever.

Some might call the space small, but I’d call it intimate. You may have to be very good friends with your fellow wine drinkers when it gets busy but the staff do their best to make sure it doesn’t get so manic people are too much in your personal space, unlike in many other watering holes where you feel like you have to even battle for oxygen. Even on race days.

But come on, it’s a 13th century crypt you’re drinking your wine in. I’d be willing to make a few sacrifices for the pleasure.

So, if fabulous wine with some rather fetching cheese boards and other small nibbles are your game, I’d head to Corks Out post haste.
