Chester Beer & Wine Spring Portfolio Tasting

I have a confession: I’m somewhat of a serial offender when it comes to Chester Beer & Wine events. I don’t need much convincing to go for a few drinks at the best of times but when you’re invited to a portfolio tasting session with about 14 of reps showing around 200 of their favourite wines and spirits – well, you just don’t say no to that, do you?

So hubby and I ditched our evening plans (we didn’t really have any but if I’d say that we’d sound a little sad, wouldn’t we?) and off we went to the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, an 18th Century Manor House, which you gotta admit is a pretty swanky place for a portfolio tasting sesh.

We had this great plan of reading through the tasting booklet and make educated but a little adventurous choices but that all went to wind when we realised the sheer amount of things there were to taste. It was a lot. So we decided to leave the whiskies to the end of the night to ensure we’d survive the onslaught of all things wine and off we headed into the wilderness.

I’m always super curious about the origins of my tipple but if the never-ending flow of “where is that from”, “how long is that aged”, “why is that so smoky” and “oh my God that is divine” annoyed the ever-patient reps they never let it show. Actually they were all super nice and rather generous in their offerings. CB&W work with pretty fab people, that’s for sure.

I’m kinda sad I didn’t get to talk to every single of the reps in as great detail as the Tazmanian wine boffin Emma McRobb from Alliance Wine, who I have met before, but my powers of communication were rapidly decreasing as we were making our way through the tables. I did reaffirm my love affair with Portuguese wine and Spanish rioja, and the lovely reps indulging my curiosity of the different kinds were so lovely I feel really bad I didn’t note down their names. Sorry guys!

In the previous CB&W tasting events I have learned that it’s not chardonnay I hate, it’s bad chardonnay, that sparkling wine can also be red and this time I learned that Romanian wine is pretty damn amazing and that Indian whiskey is banging. A bit like my head the next day after trying like 6 or something of them. It’s all a little hazy after whiskey number 4. Or was it 5?

Tickets for the Spring Portfolio Tasting were only £18 per head, so that’s a lot of bang for your buck. But, to be fair, CB&W events have always been really good value for money. If you fancy checking them out (and you totally should) you can see all the CB&W events HERE.
