Save or Splash – the face edition

You know I keep saying I am super stingy. Well, kind of. I mean, I will “umm and arhhh” over any purchase that is over the price of a pint, but will not even blink paying a bar tab of over £60. Yeah, I know. Anyway, expensive doesn’t always mean amazing and if I can grab a bargain I definitely will. Here’s some I prepared earlier:

Concealers

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer – £17.50

VS

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer £3.99

What they promise?

Urban Decay: Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer gives you buildable, even coverage with a luminous, demi-matte finish. Ultra lightweight, this high-tech formula melds like a second skin to give you full coverage in an instant.

Collection: Conceals flaws, imperfections and blemishes for up to 16 hours. Water-resistent and transfer proof. Use with Lasting Perfection Foundation and Powder for the ultimate in long-lasting wear.
Splash or Save?

There is no denying that the UD concealer is amazing. It has pigments upon pigments and it’s lovely and lightweight… but so is the Collection one. It’s bonkers. The Collection concealer is super blendable and matches even to very light skintones super easy. It’s one of my makeup bag staples and I will not hear a bad word about it. Definitely save on this one.

Foundation

Estée Lauder Double Wear – £31

VS

Revlon ColorStay™ Foundation – £12.99

What they promise?

Estée Lauder: The UK’s NO. 1 Foundation. 15-hour staying power. Flawless all day.

Revlon: Specially formulated for combination or oily skin, this oil-free formula helps control shine for a perfect velvet-matte finish.

Splash or Save?

I’ll admit, I am a massive fan of the Double Wear. I used to swear by it. It’s just… my bank account hates it. I know a little goes a long way and you get what you pay for and all that jazz, but still. Then I found the ColorStay and I swear I thought I saw stars. This baby has the same staying power, coverage and amazing pigmentation as the Double Wear. If I’m feeling particularly flush I would always splash for the DW but I’ll admit – I am a convert. In this case, more often than not, I would save. It could go either way.

Fixing Powder

NYX Professional Makeup Studio Finishing Powder – £8

VS

Seventeen Stay Time Pressed Powder – £4.49

What they promise?

Nyx: This 100% pure mineral silica finishing powder is perfect for setting your foundation or wearing alone.

Seventeen: Fixes your foundation in place and holds it there.

Now as far as I understand, Seventeen is a cheaper version of Boots’ No7 brand, and we all know No7 has all kinds of fabulous products. I’ve often bought the Seventeen equivalent to the more expensive No7 one and never been disappointed… Until now. The fixing powder doesn’t fix anything anywhere. It has no staying power and lets oil through very quickly. It also sits really awkwardly on the foundation, creating cracks and looking caky. Unlike the NYX powder, which blends easily onto your foundation and doesn’t need topping up for hours and hours. So, if you consider £8 a splash, don’t, it is a great investment.

Have you products you’ve found more economic versions of from somewhere? Tell me all about it! ❤❤

  • In a world where it’s such a big deal to always be using and pimping the latest and greatest “high end” makeup, I really love posts that compare and contrast the high end with the more affordable drugstore brands. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on high end expensive makeup and sometimes I feel like that’s weird because so many women (that I see online) are vying for the latest greatest. So it’s nice to see posts like this – it makes me feel less weird for being frugal.

  • Thanks so much for this post, I love how practical and informative it is, now I know where to save a few pennies to give myself a little treat (except my equivalent of a pint is coffee 😉 Xx

  • Oindrila

I usually save some pennies from here and there to find a product that’s worth splurging my money on. Well, I’ve never tried NYX but it’s definitely in my list to have.

  • Make up does get super pricey so thanks for letting us know what deals to look out for. Will def be trying some of these. 🙂

    Happy holidays!

  • I love these kind of posts! I usually try and save as much as I can, but there are a few items it’s definitely worth spurging. For example, the NYX powder is amazing 🙂

  • Collection Lasting perfection concealer is the absolute best concealer ever! So much better than most Luxury brands!

  • I’ve been using the collection concealer for years and swear by it. It’s so light, doesn’t grease and blends so well, just as good as any luxury brand.

  • I’ve yet to try the NYX powder, it’s always sold out But I do agree that the collection concelear is a must! It is definitely my go to concelear, unless I need to super conceal then I use my trusty Tarte Maracuja concelear
