7 things making me happy right now

It’s International Day of Happiness y’all. No, seriously. Happiness gets its own day and today is it.

What is this “day of happiness”, I hear you ask. Well. It’s an annual event that’s celebrated in 193 countries, 2 observer states and in 11 territories, so pretty much all over the world. It’s a day when we should dedicate our “efforts to filling our world with happiness” and as it happens, it coincides with the March equinox, when night and day are nearly the same length (roughly 12 hours each). OK – so the last part was totally intentional but it’s rather fitting innit? The darkness of winter is giving way to the warmth and light of spring. Huzzah!

Anyway, I digress. It’s the International Day of Happiness, so it’s only fitting that we reflect on things that are making us happy right now. Here’s what’s been making me merry of late:

Days getting longer

Adios, winter. Spring’s almost here! And not a minute too soon. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t get a little down with the constant darkness of winter but now that the daytime is catching up we’re all a little more alert and awake. Plus, when the days are longer I have more time to get on with my shenanigans in daylight.

Spending more time with friends

For whatever reason, I’ve turned into a virtual recluse of late and that has to stop. I’m a social butterfly and I need human interaction so I’ve made a point to rock up to see my pals more. Just this week we had a dinner party one night and on another we went to see our friends play a live gig in a pub. Friendships are good for you (says science) and I already feel more connected to the universe. More of this please.

Work with purpose

You know that feeling – the warm, fuzzy one you get when you do something nice? Turns out, it’s good for your health. I’ve been dedicating some my time and talents to volunteering for projects promoting equality and fighting discrimination, been working on myself to be a better ally to my friends who don’t enjoy all the privileges I enjoy, and just trying to make my friends’ life a little brighter and lighter. I know it’s like 50% selfish because it makes me feel good about myself but it also benefits others so… it’s not all bad, eh?

Planning an adventure

I’ma love me some traveling and I’m planning to do a lot more of it this year. This year we’ve already been to Helsinki and Rauma (in Finland) and Amsterdam, and we’ve got Budapest, Barcelona and Berlin in our sights for the summer (yes, I see what I just did there). But I want to see more of the UK as well while we’re still here – so we’re trying to schedule Sheffield, Cardiff, Belfast, Glasgow and a few more into our already busy calendars. Being a Citizen of the World makes me continuously happy, and I don’t care what Tessy May, PM has to say about it.

I used to scoff a little when people were talking about mindfulness, because often they made out like that was the only thing you needed to break free from the headlock that is depression or anxiety. But, taking a few moments to find centre and perspective and to remove oneself from troubling thoughts and find focus. At first meditating feels a little odd, and I certainly didn’t know if I was doing it right or if it was worth doing at all, but I definitely feel better for it. Also, apps like Calm have something that’s called “Sleep Stories”, which are like bedtime stories, but for adults. I mean, who doesn’t want to hear the likes of Stephen Fry read you a soothing tale to help you unwind and fall asleep? I’ma take back all the bad things I said about mindfulness. It’s the bomb, y’all.

New bedsheets

They’re soft and they’re cuddly and I feel like I’m wrapped in a cloud. I’m making a point of buying new bedsheets more often. Bonus points if they look cool. Extra bonus points of they’re Pusheen.

There’s something super therapeutical about baking and I intend to bake a lot more going forward. Not so much because I want to be a master baker or take part in the next series of The Great British Bake Off, but because I want to be eating a lot more cake. Chocolate cake, Victoria Sponge cake, butter cake, short cake, cup cakes – I don’t care what it is but I want to make it and I want to eat it. So there you are.

Happy International Day of Happiness, y’all. Tell me what’s making you happy in the comments.

These are all things that I could find happiness in for sure. I think the biggest one would be in planning an adventure. I wouldn’t go all the way and plan every detail. I think the unplanned moments are often the best. But going on an adventure is awesome and looking forward to it is definitely something I would do.

Funny enough, hubby said exactly that! his answer was that maybe the high levels of suicides take care of the rest of that list – but that is pretty morbid!

I am also happy for all those things Katja. Always trying to be a better version of myself.
Oh baking – I am working on it too. I enjoy it so much but often find a little time for that. 🙂 Be always happy like this. xx

Just the idea that Spring is here is enough to be happy for awhile! Our weather is getting slightly warmer by the day and I’m looking forward to all the wonderful possibilities the warmer weather will bring!

Happy Happiness day to you too! Lovely post, those things make me happy too! As well as the feeling I get when I can finally relax after a period of very hard work, holidays, the sun, a good book, and my Netflix account. Netflix, I love you!
