Fire alarms, pancakes and bacon: Breakfast time at Loudons

Loudons is a café in the central of Edinburgh and it is the stuff of legends. So much so, that on the day we visited we thought we’d ran into an enormous, never-ending queue of people. Turns out that their fire alarm was having a bit of a moment and as a precaution, the staff took all the punters outside until it stopped beeping. But, no one abandoned their post and everyone returned to their coffees and (sharpishly replaced) breakfasts once the coast was clear and no one complained. Speaks volumes, really.

Anyway. The café makes a point of making most of their produce on the spot, while keeping them (at least a little bit) healthy and interesting. They want to serve the kind of food that they like to eat at home.  They’re all about super foods too, their smoothies are so jam-packed with the stuff you feel instantly better just by looking at them on the menu.  There’s also an in-house bakery which is a big part of their hands-on, in-house approach because they think it’s important to know where all their bread and cakes are from.

Basically, it’s a brunch paradise. Because I don’t know about you but if the food they serve is the kind they eat at home I want to go and live with them. Their menu makes me hyperventilate out of excitement. Also, out of sadness because I know I can’t possible have all of it. Hubby had the Cajun Spiced Benny, an English muffin with avocado, bacon and poached eggs topped with Cajun hollandaise sauce and spiced crayfish. I wolfed down a homemade pancake stack layered with bacon and baked banana topped with maple syrup. Yes, it was exactly as bloody marvellous as it sounds like.

This place gets packed really quickly and I think we were just lucky with the fire alarm incident: it may have deterred some new folk from joining the queue. But to be fair, the staff handled everything with such grace and poise, and they served us such super food I probably would have queued forever just to have brekkie there. So yeah. It was spot on, something a little special and I got a great story out of it as well. Done deal.

If you’re in Edinburgh and you don’t eat here you have wasted a trip. Serious.

Same. All I have is the standard office dryroasted variety. Not cool 🙁

I’ve actually never ever been out to brunch, and I really want to find a good place to go some day. If I ever make it up to Edinburgh I’ll make sure to hit this place up (I’ve saved this post just in case the opportunity ever arises!)
